Mofaya! A call to action, a mantra for self determination. Mofaya the Musical is a story of the forgotten people of Kwa Maji, an imaginary informal settlement in Nairobi, who tap into the resilience that we all possess at the prompting of a young community radio DJ - perhaps a theatrical testimony to the notion that “we can change the world, one man at a time”. DJ Lwanda fnds himself the benefciary of the very “system” that his vocal vitriol has always been directed at, through his purveyor the wealthy, wily and greedy Ana Mali, who woos him out of community radio, into the fast life of being a radio DJ at a prominent radio station. His awakening comes when a massacre orchestrated by Ana Mali and government offcials, fails to get the media attention it deserves. The conniving Ana is determined to get the prime land that the Kwa Maji hovels sit on, but DJ Lwanda’s return to Kwa Maji thwarts her evil plans as he stirs the people to action.

The Musical’s cast lead by Eric Wainaina and directed by John Sibi-Okumu features some of Kenya’s most illustrious artistic talent like Mumbi Kaigwa, Dan “Chizi” Aceda, and Valerie Kimani - winner of the 2007 Tusker Project Fame competition. The musical has received high acclaim at the New York Musical Festival and comes home to Kenya.
